Staying Safe in the Dark
Summer is here and so too are those warm evenings. If you plan to be out and about after dark, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:
Walk with a friend, family member, or pet. If you’re walking alone, let someone know where you are going.
At night, walk a familiar route. Stay oriented to your surroundings. i.e., How far am I from home? Where can I go for help? Can someone hear or see me?
Be alert to your surroundings. Don’t walk with ears obstructed (no headphones). Avoid walking and concentrating on your cell phone.
Wear reflective clothing. Carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp.
Use sidewalks and pathways. Walk in areas where the path has lighting.
Be careful when crossing roads. Never assume drivers can see you, even in crosswalks.
Keep your keys readily available so you can access your vehicle, home, or building easily.
