Staying Safe in the Dark

Summer is here and so too are those warm evenings. If you plan to be out and about after dark, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Walk with a friend, family member, or pet. If you’re walking alone, let someone know where you are going.

  • At night, walk a familiar route. Stay oriented to your surroundings. i.e., How far am I from home? Where can I go for help? Can someone hear or see me?

  • Be alert to your surroundings. Don’t walk with ears obstructed (no headphones). Avoid walking and concentrating on your cell phone.

  • Wear reflective clothing. Carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp.

  • Use sidewalks and pathways. Walk in areas where the path has lighting.

  • Be careful when crossing roads. Never assume drivers can see you, even in crosswalks.

  • Keep your keys readily available so you can access your vehicle, home, or building easily.

  • If you are in danger or witness suspicious behavior, call 911
